Umbilical Hernia

Umbilical hernias occur when abdominal contents protrude through the abdominal wall at or near the belly button.

Often, they contain only fatty tissue and remain asymptomatic however they can also contain other structures such as bowel which can lead to incarceration and obstruction.

Surgical repair is commonly recommended for symptomatic, enlarging or high-risk hernias. The goal of the surgery is to return the protruding contents to the abdominal cavity and close the abdominal wall. This can be completed by laparoscopic or open approaches.
