Fundoplication and Hiatus Hernia Repair

Fundoplication and hiatal hernia repair are operations used to treat gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) and hiatal hernias.

The operation is usually performed laparoscopically (keyhole) and involves wrapping the top of the stomach (fundus) around the lower part of the oesophagus. This strengthens the anti-reflux ‘barrier’ preventing the symptoms caused by stomach acid refluxing into the oesophagus.

This procedure can be done as a complete ‘360’ wrap or a partial wrap depending on the indication for the procedure and patient symptoms.

Hiatal hernia repair is done when part of the stomach or other organs have moved up into the chest through the hiatus. This procedure involves returning these organs to their usual position within the abdomen and repairing the diaphragmatic hiatus. It is often undertaken concurrently with fundoplication.
