Heller Myotomy
Heller myotomy (cardiomyotomy) is an operation used to treat achalasia, where the lower oesophageal sphincter muscle fails to relax properly.
This operation is usually performed laparoscopically (keyhole) and involves the division of the outer muscle fibres of the lower oesophagus to allow food and liquids to pass freely into the stomach.
The procedure is usually combined with a fundoplication to reduce reflux symptoms.
