Obesity
Obesity is a complex, chronic condition with multiple contributing factors rather than a single cause. It arises from an interaction between genetics, metabolism, hormonal regulation, environment, lifestyle and psychological influences.
For most patients living with obesity, management is not simply a matter of ‘diet and exercise’ as there are so many other factors at play.
Obesity is associated with conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, sleep apnoea, liver disease, joint and mobility issues, and cancer. Obesity has been shown to significantly reduce life expectancy.
Because of its multifactorial nature effective management requires a comprehensive, individualised and team approach. This includes a combination of dietary and lifestyle modification, psychological and emotional support, medical therapy and bariatric metabolic surgery.
Long-term success is best achieved with a structured team approach involving GP’s, dietitians, bariatric nurses, endocrinologists, psychologists and bariatric metabolic surgeons. The goal is sustainable health improvement and improved quality of life indefinitely, rather than short-term weight loss alone.
At Metabolic GI Surgery Brisbane, we are very fortunate to have all these resources available on site.
