Manometry and pH Studies

Manometry and pH studies are performed in rooms at Metabolic GI Surgery Brisbane.

For both studies a small tube is placed through the nose and into the stomach using a local anaesthetic jelly.

Manometry is used to assess the function and contraction of the oesophagus and can also diagnose hiatal hernias. This procedure takes approximately 30 minutes.

pH testing measures refluxing acid from the stomach up into the oesophagus which can cause symptoms such as heartburn. This is assessed over 24-48 hours.

Indications for manometry and pH testing include:

  • Swallowing difficulties

  • Severe or unresponsive reflux symptoms

  • Preoperative assessment
