Hiatal Hernia
A hiatal hernia occurs when part of the stomach or other organ moves up into the chest through the oesophageal opening (hiatus) in the diaphragm.
Common symptoms include reflux, regurgitation, difficulty swallowing, chest pain and shortness of breath.
Diagnosis often involves contrast imaging studies, endoscopy and manometry/pH testing.
Treatment depends on the severity of symptoms as well as the type and size of hiatal hernia. This may range from lifestyle modifications and medications, through to surgical repair.
