Cholecystectomy and Bile Duct Exploration

Cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal) is a very common procedure used to treat gallbladder issues such as gallstones, inflammation, and polyps.

Surgery is usually performed laparoscopically (keyhole) allowing for a rapid post-operative recovery. Many patients will go home the same day or the following day and return to usual activities within a week.

Bile duct exploration is performed when gallstones become lodged in the bile duct. This can lead to pain, jaundice, infection and pancreatitis.

Generally, this can be performed at the same time as cholecystectomy by placing a small basket or camera down the bile duct to retrieve the stone.
