Gastric and Small Bowel Resection
Resection of the stomach and small bowel is usually performed in the elective setting for tumours. Patients may present with bowel obstruction, bleeding or be identified incidentally.
Depending on the size, type and location of the tumour a variety of surgical approaches can be undertaken.
Common lesions of the stomach and small bowel include gastrointestinal stromal tumours (GIST), neuroendocrine tumours, and Meckel’s diverticulum.
A multidisciplinary approach with oncology is often required when caring for these patients.
