Revisional Bariatric Surgery

Revisional bariatric surgery refers to surgery performed after a previous bariatric procedure.

Common reasons for revisional surgery include reflux, hiatus hernia, band-related problems, weight regain and difficulty swallowing.

Revisional bariatric surgery is much more complex than primary bariatric surgery due to the changed anatomy and scar tissue. This means that the potential risk of complication is higher. As such careful preoperative assessment and planning is crucial to determine the safest and most appropriate treatment.

Examples of revisional surgery include:

  • conversion of lap band to gastric bypass

  • conversion of sleeve gastrectomy to gastric bypass

  • conversion of OAGB to RYGB

  • reversal of gastric bypass
