Inguinal Hernia

Inguinal hernias occur when a weakness in the groin area allows the protrusion of abdominal contents (often fat or bowel).

This commonly presents as a lump or swelling in the groin that can extend into the scrotum in men. Other symptoms include pain or a heavy dragging sensation.

Inguinal hernias are often asymptomatic but can enlarge over time.

Surgical repair is generally recommended for symptomatic, enlarging or high-risk hernias. This is routinely completed laparoscopically (keyhole) but can also be repaired with an open approach in some circumstances.
