Diaphragmatic Hernia
Diaphragmatic hernia occurs when abdominal organs move into the chest cavity through a defect or weakness in the diaphragm. These may be congenital from birth or acquired, often from trauma or surgery.
Diaphragmatic hernias may cause symptoms such as shortness of breath or discomfort, however, are often seen incidentally on imaging.
Management depends on the type of hernia, symptoms, and the risk of complications. Surgical repair can often be performed laparoscopically (keyhole) through the abdomen.
